b. Classification of Entries
3) The PPA numeric point system is used for scoring. The first round of judging will be for an Above Average rating (equivalent to a Blue Ribbon – 70 to 79 points). The second round of judging will be for Deserving of Merit (equivalent to Gold Ribbon – 80 to 100 points). At the end of the competition, the three highest scores will determine Best of Show, 2nd place and 3rd place. Should there be a tie for Best of Show, all qualified judges shall determine the Best of Show by thumbs up/Thumbs down majority vote.
• Print must be 80 square inches or larger, and any shape, but must be mounted on 16X20 or larger size mount board. Overlay and underlay mats are acceptable.
• In NCPP competition, canvas mounted prints will be permitted. If canvas is mounted to stretcher bars, back side of canvas must be protected with cardboard or other material to prevent damage to the canvas print.
2) Electronic Imaging
• Entries must demonstrate the E/I work of the entrant. However, source images need not be the work of the entrant. The purpose of this competition is to determine images that excel both in technical proficiency and in the creative use of electronic imaging.
• Images must be 80 square inches or larger, and any shape, but must be mounted on 16X20 or larger size mount board. Overlay and underlay mats are acceptable.
• As with the Photographic Open category, images are judged utilizing the twelve elements of a merit image, and are scored using the PPA numeric point system.
3) Album Category
• All images in the album must have been photographed by the entrant. And all images must be from the same social event or portrait session.
• In NCPP competition, albums may be any size, and multiple volume entries are allowed. Images within the album may be of any size for the purpose of enhancing creativity and storytelling.
• As with the Photographic Open category, albums are judged utilizing the twelve elements of a merit image, and are scored using the PPA numeric point system.
c. Entry Rules
3) Only twenty prints will be guaranteed participation. Additional prints will be judged only as time allows. 8/06
4) The maker‟s name, category and title must appear on the back of the mount board. The name on the back of the print must be the maker‟s name, not the studio name. All prints must have a title; “Untitled” is not an acceptable title. G-8
5) Albums will be assigned a number by the print comp chair. Titles are not required.
6) There must be no studio name or photographer‟s signature visible on the front of a print or within an album. If a print is signed, or an album embossed with the studio name or logo, it is the maker„s responsibility to cover the signature with removable tape or other means. If the signature or logo has not been covered when the entry is displayed to the judges, the print will be disqualified from judging at that meeting.
7) When an entry is awarded a Blue Ribbon, the maker has the option of re-making the image with improvements, reprinting and entering the image into print comp a second time. No image may be entered into monthly competition more than twice.3/06
1) Blue Ribbons are awarded to prints scoring 70 to 79 points.
3) Best of Show, and a Gold Rosette Ribbon, will be awarded to the print receiving the highest point total.
4) If two or more prints tie for the high score, these prints will be presented to the judges for a final thumbs up/thumbs down choice for Best of Show. If the judges are unable to provide a clear majority, the final chose shall be determined by committee.
6) The Best of Show winner must provide an image file or camera ready artwork to the Editor of the Focal Point
2. People’s Choice Print Competition
1) At the discretion of the Print Chair, a theme may be assigned to a People’s Choice competition once each year. The theme may or may not pertain to the subject of the speaker’s program. The theme will be announced at the meeting, published in the Focal Point.
4) Entries must be signed in with the print comp chair at least ten minutes before the start of the meeting.
5) Entries will be assigned a number by the print comp chair. Titles are not required.
6) Depending on the style of the entry, the photographer’s name or studio logo may be an integral part of the entry and therefore may remain visible during judging.
1) At the end of the speakers presentation, each NCPP member and our guest speaker will be given a ballot. Ballots will be collected by the print comp chair.
6) For any photograph submitted for publication or for the NCPP web site, a model release must be on file, whether or not the individual (or individuals) is a client, or is a photograph of a client’s property or other private property, or is a photograph of public property for which a fee is charged to photograph at that location.
Entries must have been entered in competition during the immediate past calendar year in either PPA Style or People‟s Choice competition. The Print Comp Chair may allow a member to present a duplicate reprint for End of the Year competition, if for various reasons the original print is not available. 11/08
3) Five judges from outside NCPP will be asked to judge all categories.
4) Awards will be given for first, second and third places in Environmental Portrait, Studio Portrait, Electronic Imaging, Event and Album categories. 11/08
5) A minimum of 5 entries by 3 different makers is required in each category before an award will be given in that category.
6) One outstanding image will be chosen from all categories by the judges and awarded “Print of the Year.”
7) Award plaques will include the NCPP logo, the year, maker’s name, entry title, place and category.
Deadline for Year End Print Comp entries shall be November 30th of the current year. G-9
4) First place will be awarded to the entry that receives the most votes. Second and third place will also be awarded.
5) Award plaques will state “People’s Choice Award” and include the NCPP logo, the year, maker’s name, entry title and place, e.g. First Place.
